Shift & Share is a Liberating Structure that facilitates focused and efficient sharing of knowledge and experiences among participants. It’s particularly useful when you want to gather insights or solutions on a specific topic quickly. Here’s an elaboration on Shift & Share, including how to facilitate it, when to use it, its advantages, and expected outcomes.

How to Facilitate Shift & Share:

  1. Preparation: The facilitator introduces the concept of Shift & Share and explains the purpose. Participants are informed that they will engage in multiple rounds of sharing on a given topic or question.
  2. Formation: Participants are divided into small groups of around four to six people. Each group forms a circle or gathers in a designated area.
  3. Sharing Rounds: In each round, one person from each group (the “messenger”) briefly shares insights or responses related to the topic. The sharing should be concise, usually lasting around 1-2 minutes.
  4. Rotation: After the initial round, the messengers rotate clockwise to the next group, while the remaining participants (the “listeners”) stay in their positions.
  5. Listening and Synthesizing: In the new group, the messenger shares the insights or responses they heard in the previous group. Listeners can ask clarifying questions or offer additional insights.
  6. Continued Rotation: The rotation continues for several rounds, with messengers sharing and listeners synthesizing the insights from their previous group. This process creates a cascade of information flow.
  7. Closing and Reflection: The facilitator may conclude the Shift & Share activity with a brief reflection or discussion to consolidate the key takeaways or actions generated during the rounds.

When to Facilitate Shift & Share: Shift & Share is suitable for various scenarios, including:

  • Knowledge Sharing Workshops: To quickly gather and share knowledge or insights on a specific topic.
  • Brainstorming and Idea Generation: It can be used to generate ideas and solutions from different perspectives.
  • Problem-Solving: When you need to address a complex problem, Shift & Share can help gather diverse insights.
  • Learning from Peers: Shift & Share is effective in settings where participants can learn from the experiences and expertise of their peers.

Advantages:

  1. Efficient Knowledge Sharing: Shift & Share efficiently captures and shares knowledge and insights within a short amount of time.
  2. Diverse Perspectives: Participants benefit from a variety of perspectives and solutions as they move between groups.
  3. Engagement: It encourages active participation and engagement among participants, promoting collaboration.
  4. Quick Information Flow: The structured rotation ensures a rapid flow of information and ideas.

Expected Outcomes: The outcomes of a Shift & Share session may include:

  • Diverse Insights: Participants gain diverse insights and perspectives on the topic of discussion.
  • Ideas and Solutions: The activity generates a range of ideas and potential solutions to the topic’s challenges.
  • Improved Communication: Participants enhance their ability to convey complex ideas concisely.
  • Community Building: Shift & Share fosters a sense of community and collaboration among participants.
  • Actionable Takeaways: The structured sharing often leads to actionable takeaways or next steps related to the topic.

In summary, Shift & Share is a Liberating Structure that promotes efficient knowledge sharing, diverse perspectives, and engagement among participants. It’s a valuable tool for quickly gathering insights or solutions on a specific topic and fostering collaboration among participants.
